Review Ultra Tiny Epic Kingdoms

Game: Tiny Epic Kingdoms
Publisher: Gamelyn Games
Designer: Scott Almes
Year: 2014
Players: 1-5
Time: 30-45 min

Tiny Epic Kingdoms is a card game where you need to expand your own kingdom by placing cubes in the kingdoms of you opponents. Every faction has different advances. You can expand your kingdom by collecting resources, battling each other and learning some magic.

🔥Review: I was really exited to play this game because I’m a huge fan of Tiny Epic Zombies, but I got disappointed. I tried really hard, but just didn’t liked it. The artwork is underwhelming, and the game itself was a bit boring. It is fun when your enter someone’s kingdom and you have to battle it out, but that’s about it.

Academics are making a board game about marriage

Legally Wed, that’s the name of the game. Players will plan a wedding and need to be the first up the aisle to win this game. Venue, food, outfit: everything need to be taken care of. But they also need the go through other steps that are required to legally marry.

The head of the school explained to why this game is so important: “The legal consequences of marriage – and the legal differences between marriage and long-term cohabitation – are poorly understood. Our research has explored how the law regulating marriage, divorce and cohabitation is applied in practice by the courts, solicitors and other legal practitioners in Scotland.”

The game is now being developed.

In the new Monopoly game, called Ms. Monopoly, female players are getting more money at the beginning of the game and also getting more money when they pass ‘go’ than male players. Fare? Not really. Necessary? Maybe…

Reversed Roles

But that is not the only twist of this female monopoly. Players van invest their money in inventions created by woman.

Female empowerment

Jen Boswinkel, the senior director of Hasbro Gaming, says that this game is specially made for kids so they can learn about inequality between women and men. “With all of the things surrounding female empowerment, it felt right to bring this to Monopoly in a fresh new way”, says Jen to USA Today. “It’s giving the topic some relevancy to everyone playing it that everybody gets a turn, and this time women get an advantage at the start.”

Review of Sushi Go

Game: Sushi Go
Publisher: White Goblin Games
Year: 2015
Players: 2-5
Time: 15 min

In the card game Sushi Go you have to collect cards with a variation of Japanese sushi on them. Each card has a specifiek value and some of them only have value when you have more of them. The cards in your hand aren’t your’s, because every time you pick a card, you need to give your hand cards to the person on the right. Your not only collecting point for one of the three rounds, but also for the last round: the dessert!

🔥review: The first time we played this game, we thought it was kind of complicated. The different rounds, all the different cards that score points in a different way and then the pudding you need to collect for the end. Not easy! But after a couple of rounds, we started to get the hang of it. We developed some tactics and a strategic and the fun part is that they are so different!
The game lasts for just 15 minutes and therefore this game is perfect for a quick in between game and even very well playable with kids.
The cards look amazing. The illustrations are clear and everyone who has eaten sushi once wil recognize the dishes.

Score: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Scientists research rules of ancient board games

Humans are playing games for centuries. Even in 3100 BCE people were into board games. In that time Egyptians played a game called Senet. Until this day the rules for that game are not clear, but now researchers are trying to figure out how it works.

One of them, Cameron Browne, tells platform Vice how they do that: “The rules have never been recorded, so our knowledge is largely based on historian’s reconstructions.” Browne is working on the Digital Ludeme Project at the University of Maastricht in The Netherlands with computational techniques to discover the rules of the game. The system with which they are working is called Ludii, and those who are interested can follow the project. There is even an app that allow you to test out the reconstructions of acient games like the Viking chess Hnefatafl.

“With our system, we can put in the equipment, we can look for rules from the date [of the board’s creation], rules from the area, rules from the cultural context”, says Browne about the research. ” Then we can piece together likely rule sets that might have occurred.” Eventually the researchers want to put all the information about ancient board games in a database, so possible connections between board games over time cna be made.

More adults switch video games for board games

Every day more and more adults switch their consoles for playing video games into dice. According to Telegraph board games are getting more popular!

Ever since 3D printing made making miniatures figurines easier, a lot of video gamers discovered the fun of board games. It also became more popular because more board game designers are making games based on video games.

That means that in stead of staring at the television and talking to strangers, people spend more ‘real time’ with their friends. Great news!

Review of Wingspan

Game: Wingspan
Publisher: Stonemaier Games
Artist: Anna Martinez Jaramillo, Natalia Rojas, Beth Sobel
Year: 2019
Players: 1-5
Time: 40-70 min

In the game wingspan you are a bird enthusiast. You try to collect as many birds, and some of the birds have special ability’s. There for, during the four rounds of the game, you build up a system of birds that give you points, let you collect food or place eggs.
Wingspan is an engine building game and has a automa version, so you can play this game on your own.

🔥review: There is a hype going on. In every game store this game is in the shop window and display case, and for a good reason. First of all, the game looks amazing. All of the birds are beautifully drawn and the information about the specific bird on the card is really nice. The eggs come in beautiful colors and even the users guide is looking nice. The game play is also really nice, because it actually quite simple to play and even people who don’t play a lot of board games, will be able to play this game within 15 minutes. Each round, every player can only do one action. So the game starts simple ans slow, but because this is a engine building game, the game will intensify.
Also the solo play, that is made by Automa Factory, plays really nice. I honestly think this is the first board game that has a solo mode I like just as much as the more player version.
